Apo Island is a small volcanic Island in the Visayan region of the Philippines. It is a Marine Sanctuary where fishing is strictly regulated and only local fisherman can fish using sustainable methods. No fishing nets are used, only hand-lines and small bamboo fish cages in designated areas.
Each year lot of turtles drown as a result of getting trapped in fishing nets. Here there's no fear for that so turtles can roam free without getting trapped in these nets. At the moment there's a healthy population of Green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) and Hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata). Both of them, as most sea turtles are endangered. Catching of the eggs or hunting these turtles is forbidden.
