NEW GREAT WHITE SHARK FILM FOR IMAX THEATER
Misrepresented, maligned and misunderstood, the Great White Shark is an iconic predator: the creature we love to fear... GW3D will explore the Great White's place in our imaginations, in our fears, and in the reality of its role at the top of the oceanic food chain...

Shot on location in South Africa, New Zealand, Mexico and California, the film looks to find the truth behind the mythic creature forever stigmatised by its portrayal in the world's first blockbuster movie, JAWS.

Great Whites pre-date the dinosaurs in evolutionary history, and have evolved to be both warm blooded and give birth to live pups, much like mammals: yet we fail to look on them with the warmth we might afford land based carnivores such as Lions, Tigers and Bears.

GW3D aims to reveal the strength and beauty of these animals by looking through the eyes of those who have been touched by their shark encounters: Mike Rutzen, South African shark operator, who swims with Great Whites in the aptly named Shark Alley, Dr. Chris Lowe who has been tagging juvenile Great Whites off the coast of Los Angeles and discovering more and more of their secret life, and two record breaking free-divers, Frederic Buyle and William Winram, who tag Great Whites by simply holding their breath and free diving with the sharks...

The Giant Manta Rays of Thailand

The giant manta ray, Manta birostris, is a common visitor to Thailand. The first manta ray in this video was filmed at Koh Bon's south-west ridge, north of the Similan Islands in the Andaman Sea, where scuba divers can often encounter giant manta rays.

We then meet another giant manta ray at Hin Daeng in Thailand's southern islands, another popular scuba diving destination.

Finally we encounter a giant manta ray at Richelieu Rock, also north of the Similan Islands in the Surin Islands National Park.

Manta rays are pelagic elasmobranchs, closely related to sharks. There are now known to be at least 2 distinct species of manta ray. This video features the largest species, the giant manta ray, Manta birostris, which is thought to travel great distances underwater.

The first giant manta ray at Koh Bon has 2 common remoras, Remora remora, attached to it's head. The manta at Richelieu Rock has many smaller remoras (live sharksuckers), Echeneis naucrates, accompanying it. The remoras attach themselves to the manta ray and other large marine animals using their dorsal fin, which has evolved into a sucker. The remoras get a free ride, and they feed on the giant manta ray's faeces.

Manta rays are threatened because of overfishing. The manta's gill rakers are used in a so-called Traditional Chinese Medicine. As it has become popular in recent years, the manta ray population has fallen dramatically, and the IUCN have declared giant manta rays as "vulnerable with an elevated risk of extinction".

Socorro | Solmar V by Simon Spear

The Socorro Islands (Revillagigedos Archipelago) are an amazing dive destination that we had the good fortune to visit in February aboard the Solmar V. Often overshadowed by their perhaps more famous eastern Pacific cousins Cocos Island and the Galapagos, they are certainly a world class destination in their own right with some amazing diving and big animal encounters.

Humpback Whales, Dolphins, Manta Rays, Tuna and Sharks (Hammerheads, Galapagos, Silky, Whitetip, Silvertip, Whalesharks) are frequent encounters and these islands can claim to have some of the most diver friendly animals we have ever experienced. The Dolphins and Manta Rays in particular appear to actively seek out diver interactions with the later basking in the jacuzzi created by divers bubbles.

Unfortunately due to bad weather we didn't manage to visit Roca Partida which is one of the three main islands of the archipelago and where the Solmar V went on to experience 2 months of in water interactions with a Humpback Mother and Calf. Oh well, it looks like we'll have to go back again one day then doesn't it!! :)

Note: This was our first trip diving and filming with the Sony FS100 and Amphibico Genesis housing. We experienced significant issues with both the camera and the housing which meant that 90% of the footage we shot was basically useless. This film has been made from the remaining 10% that was salvageable. The majority of the footage is from the FS100 while the surface shots and a couple of underwater clips are from the Canon 7D. If you would like to know the issues filming underwater with the Sony FS100 and the Sony NXCAM range in general then please feel free to contact me.

Orcas vs. Sperm Whales

15 miles off the coast of Sri Lanka, a pod of Orcas trap a family of Sperm Whales. The action intensifies as the Orcas slam into the Sperm Whales, working as a unit to try and separate an individual and take down their prey.

Our story takes place on an epic expedition to Sri Lanka where our team spent 9 days at sea in search of Blue Whales. Accompanying me was my expedition partner Paul Hilton, my brother Brett, and close friends Douglas Seifert, Phil Sokol and Michael Umbscheiden. Together we battled rough seas, burning sun, cramped boat conditions and long days searching endless seas. Though not so successful with Blue Whales, what we did achieve was beyond anything any of us could have imagined, as we documented a world first underwater! This is our story!

Visions in Blue, Biofluorescent Night Diving HD Footage

UV Night Diving or Fluo Night diving is a mind blowing experience! Equipped with a vizor over our mask and a Blue torch we discovered a completely different world in the waters we have been diving for many years... The bright glowing reef is stunning and when we take a closer look we can see the polyps feed. On the sandy bottom, we discover that Flounders are orange and Devil Scorpionfish shine in pink, purple or red.

To be able to film this natural wonder, we got barrier filters for the camera and video lights from UV Dive Koh Tao. They introduced the Oceans Below staff to this magic!

“Baja” project, finally completed after a year of hard work and dedication, it was made to show and share with you the amazing and beautiful creatures that inhabit its waters. These beauties are still there, but most threatened. Many fish stocks have been depleted due to uncontrolled illegal fishing worldwide, especially in breeding and marine protected areas. Sharks are key species on our planet that regulate marine ecosystems, maintaining healthy populations and good gene flow, if they are removed from the seas would cause an alarming unbalance in all marine ecosystems. Unfortunately shark populations worldwide are being systematically destroyed due to demand from Asian countries to produce ¨shark fin soup" and other shark derivatives, supposedly pseudo-medicinal and aphrodisiacs. Every year, more than 70 million sharks are killed to produce the shark fin soup. Mantas, which have roamed the ocean for over 150 million years and are a kind close to the heart of each and every diver who cares about the future of our ocean, are increasingly endangered and yet we are witnessing the ecocide. Demand of Asian medicine markets for gill rakers or internal structures that Mantarays use to absorb oxygen from the sea and also they filter plankton on which they feed, has increased dramatically, leading to countless deaths. The gruesome and cruel destruction of these gentle creatures is unnecessary, tragic and extremely alarming. It is imperative that we act quickly to protect marine species populations that still prevail before it's too late, there is still time to act and it is our responsibility if we don´t want these beauties disappear, if we want our children also get to know them. Awareness is up to you.
